Elba Damast was born in 1944 in Pedernales, Venezuela. She lived and worked in New York from 1972 until her death on March 10, 2005. Her installations, sculptures, and paintings were exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. In the late 1980s and through the 1990s, she was known for her paintings in which the outlines of houses were seemingly etched into the canvas’s environment.

Throughout her career, Damast explored themes of memory, identity, and displacement—concepts deeply connected to her experience as a Venezuelan artist living in New York. Her work often bridged the gap between traditional painting techniques and immersive installation art, creating unique spaces for contemplation and connection.

Damast’s artistic legacy continues through her contributions to Latin American art and her innovative approach to audience participation. Her work has been collected by several major institutions and remains an important reference point for contemporary artists working with interactive media and memory-based narratives.
